| Dr. Mammen Chandy, recipient of International Healthcare Volunteer Award |
Dr. Mammen Chandy was awarded the International Healthcare Volunteer Award, which honours a volunteer healthcare professional who has contributed significantly in furthering the mission and goals of the WFH.
Dr. Chandy is a leading hematologist and has been a tireless volunteer for many years with the Hemophilia Federation of India (HFI) and the WFH. He was HFI vice-president from 1990-2005 and a member of the WFH Executive Committee from 2002-2006. Through his work with the WFH, Dr. Chandy was instrumental in drawing attention to the realities of people living with bleeding disorders in the developing world. Persuasive, charming, and determined, he was also the WFH liaison with the World Health Organization and presented the WFH’s case for keeping factor VIII and IX on the WHO Essential Medicines List – a move that maintained the need for governments to purchase treatment products for hemophilia patients.
Dr. Chandy is a former director of the hemophilia team at Christian Medical College in Vellore, an International Hemophilia Training Centre that has trained fellows from around the world. He is committed to high-quality comprehensive care and developing new and innovative methods to treat hemophilia. Dr. Chandy has treated many patients from India and other countries who required complicated surgery or prolonged physical therapy. He also played a key role in developing a model of hemophilia care in India and has travelled to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to help improve national standards of care.
Dr. Chandy was unable to attend Congress and upon learning of the award, he wrote: “I sincerely thank WFH for this honour. Whatever I have done for haemophilia in India has been part of my duty as a haematologist and has been taken forward by other dedicated colleagues.”
