Inga Marie Nilsson Award

L-R: Dr. Oliver Hegener, Octapharma representative, Nichan Zourikian, Professor Alison Street, WFH VP Medical and Dr. Steve Kitchen, 2008 Recipient

The Inga Marie Nilsson Award was won by Nichan Zourikian, a leading Canadian physiotherapist. As a prominent member of the WFH Musculoskeletal (MSK) Committee for over 10 years, Nichan has played a key role in twinning activities as well as the WFH’s major initiative: the Global Alliance for Progress (GAP) program.

Nichan is an active volunteer with the Canadian Hemophilia Society (CHS) and its Quebec chapter. He has contributed to WFH training workshops in many countries in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, including Senegal, Tunisia, China, Armenia, Romania, Macedonia, and Belarus. For example, in March 2003 he trained physiotherapists, patients, and families within the framework of the twinning partnership between Senegal and the CHS Quebec chapter.

He has generously shared his expertise at several musculoskeletal and world congresses since 2000, and more recently delivered advanced physiotherapy training in Lebanon. Nichan is a strong believer in the empowerment of patients through education and has authored and co-authored many important publications in the field of physiotherapy, musculoskeletal issues, and prophylaxis in hemophilia care.

Therefore, Nichan is a fitting recipient for the Inga Marie Nilsson Award, which is given to WFH volunteers who contribute new ideas or projects on “their own initiative” to develop hemophilia care.

Professor Inga Marie Nilsson of Malmo, Sweden, was a distinguished physician and one of Sweden’s most prominent clinical scientists. Professor Nilsson’s family and Octapharma created the award in her honour in 2000.
