Program at a Glance (PDF)
The fourth Advocacy in Action workshop was held in Barcelona, Spain, from 2-4 December 2011. Thirteen participants came from the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe to work on “Multiplying voices: using partnerships and alliances to advocate with the government.” They represented NMOs from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, and Turkey.
The main objectives of the workshop were to:
- Support participants in learning how to build long-term partnerships and alliances with strategic stakeholders to further their advocacy work.
- Inform participants of the benefits of partnering with traditional media and raising their awareness of social media as platforms that can help advance their advocacy goals.
- Further develop participants’ advocacy skills and reflexes through simulated negotiations with key stakeholders.
- Prepare participants for potential obstacles in their advocacy campaigns by exchanging best practices and alternative strategies.
- Provide participants with the tools to develop a skeletal advocacy project/campaign that they can implement in their countries.
The Barcelona workshop combined training on specific advocacy tools, tactics, and strategies, with hands-on work that got participants interacting with material and each other through group exercises, case studies and role-plays. They fine-tuned their understanding of how best to use data in an advocacy setting, and learned about the different traditional and social media tools at their disposal. They also broadened their horizons, thought ‘out of the box’, and examined the potential of working through new and different kinds of partnerships and alliances at local, national, regional, and international levels to further advance their advocacy work. Finally, they put these elements to use in their development of skeletal country advocacy campaigns, and received rich feedback from both facilitators and peers.
“I had the most amazing learning experience, “said one participant after the training. “It took me right out of my comfort zone; [it] was a life-changing moment for me.”
