What is Twinning

As an active example of the WFH vision of Treatment for All, the Twinning Program has enjoyed much success and growth. Thirty-two twins in 41 countries now belong to the program.

By linking emerging and established hemophilia organizations and treatment centres, the Twinning Program has improved treatment and care for people with bleeding disorders around the world.

Feedback from partners suggests that twinning is a positive two-way experience that motivates staff and volunteers, attracts youth involvement, and enables both sides to learn from each other.

In 2010, several new twinning partnerships began:

  • Accra (Ghana) – Philadelphia (USA)
  • Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) – Rochester (USA)
  • Delhi (India) – Winnipeg (Canada)
  • Davangere (India) – Liverpool (United Kingdom)
  • Tashkent (Uzbekistan) – Istanbul (Turkey)
  • Yaounde (Cameroon) – Geneva (Switzerland)
  • Algeria – PACA/Corse (France)
  • Brazil – Venezuela
  • Hungary – Romania
  • Moldova – Poland

The Hemophilia Treatment Centre, and Hemophilia Organization Twins of the Year awards for 2009 will be presented at the WFH World Congress, in Buenos Aires, June 2010.

Hemophilia Treatment Centre Twinning

The Hemophilia Treatment Centre Twinning (HTC) program pairs emerging HTCs with established ones to help increase the levels of diagnosis and medical attention for people with hemophilia.

The publication, Improving Care Beyond our Borders: a Twinning Guide for Hemophilia Treatment Centres, outlines the WFH’s Twinning Program for treatment centres, providing helpful information for current twins as well as those thinking of becoming involved in twinning. It includes information on the benefits of twinning, WFH support provided to twins, and how to go about becoming a twin. It also includes many ideas about possible activities and steps for improving diagnosis and care.

Hemophilia Organization Twinning

The Hemophilia Organization Twinning (HOT) program links emerging and established hemophilia patient groups to share knowledge in areas such as patient education, outreach, fundraising, and all other aspects of operating a successful hemophilia patient society.

The World Federation of Hemophilia has published a guide for hemophilia organization twins, Reaching Beyond our Borders: a Twinning Guide for Hemophilia Organizations, designed to help organizations which are considering twinning as well as those who have just started a twinning partnership. It includes information on the benefits of twinning, WFH support provided to twins, and how to go about becoming twins. It also includes many ideas about possible activities and steps for twinning success.
