The lives of thousands of people with hemophilia are helped or saved every year by the WFH’s program to distribute donated treatment products in developing countries.
The program, which began in 1996, has grown tremendously, and the WFH has distributed 163 million units of factor, valued at more than US $186 million, to 60 countries.
The WFH is now the world’s largest supply channel of donated hemophilia treatment products. The WFH receives donated products from product manufacturers, treatment centres, and homecare companies and then channels products to people with hemophilia with urgent needs in countries with limited access to treatment.
Donated products are used in emergency cases for patients with life-threatening bleeds or undergoing surgery. They are also used to provide concentrates for WFH development projects. The donations also support efforts by the WFH and national hemophilia organizations to lobby governments for ongoing purchases of these products and sustainable hemophilia care.
Products are sent to registered hemophilia treatment centres or to recognized national hemophilia organizations.
Global distribution of treatment products is a massive task and involves the WFH’s extensive global network of member associations. Most donations are secured and distributed in collaboration with WFH USA and the invaluable assistance of Hemophilia of Georgia, a not-for-profit organization in the United States. The Humanitarian Aid Program also receives invaluable assistance from the Irish Haemophilia Society and the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi Hemophilia Treatment Centre in Milan, Italy.
Thank you to our donors Baxter, Bayer, Pfizer, Biotest, CSL Behring and Kedrion for their generous donations.
