DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING PROGRAM
Clinical activities: Routine management; management of acute bleeds with and without factor concentrates; management of pain; management of acute emergencies; chronic synovitis; use of antifibrinolytics; sealants; DDAVP; genetic counseling; self-infusion or infusion by a relative.
Laboratory activities/research: Screening coagulation; correction studies; factor assays; inhibitor screening; inhibitor assay; assay of thrombophilia markers; thromboelastography; thrombinoscopy; lupus anticoagulant screen; anticardiolipin antibody assay; platelet aggregation studies; assay of rare coagulation factor deficiencies; von Willebrand factor assay; RFLP-based analysis of carriers and prenatal diagnosis; RFLP-based prenatal diagnosis in severe von Willebrand disease; vWD binding assay (Type 2N); inversion of intron 1 and intron 22 of factor VIII gene; multiplex assay of factor IX gene defects; CSGE and mutation analysis of factor IX gene; prenatal diagnosis by cordocentesis where molecular techniques are not available or found wanting; genetic counselling; pre and post-test counselling for carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis. Osteoporosis research, research on various aspects of chronic synovitis, inhibitor generation, cheaper management strategies, etc.
Multidisciplinary activities/research: Physiotherapy; pseudocyst and other surgical and neurosurgical managements; development of prosthetics and orthotics; use of medical ultrasound; chemical synoviorthesis; dental management.
Additional information: Formerly twinned with hemophilia centres in Milan, Italy, and Bradford, U.K. Recognized Thrombosis/Vascular Training Centre ( TVTC) by ISTH. Four of the faculty members have contributed chapters in the book Haemophilia Care in Developing Countries edited by Dr. Lily Heijnen and Dr. Tariq Sohail. The centre can train two to three fellows annually, preferably from February to April and September to December.
DESCRIPTION OF IHTC FACILITIES
Location: IHTC is located in Parel Mumbai (heart of Mumbai city). Mumbai is located on the west coast of India, with a population of approximately 12 million. It is the economic heart of the country.
