DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING PROGRAM
Clinical activities: Bangkok IHTC is organized by two parties: the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital and the Society of Hematology of Thailand. The centre provides care for 250 patients with hemophilia and over 300 cases of hereditary and acquired bleeding disorders per year. Complicated cases of hemophilia will be admitted to the Clinical Research Ward, which conducts both clinical and research studies.
Other research activities include: molecular genetics in hemophilia, sex selection; laboratory and clinical trials of new blood products from the National Blood Centre, i.e., heat-treated freeze-dried cryo; locally prepared fibrin glue in different preparations for different surgical procedures, i.e., CVS, orthopedic surgical correction in hemophilia, dental repair in hemostatic disorders, etc.
Laboratory activities/research: Routine hemostatic tests include assay of clotting factors I to I, inhibitors to FVIII & I, vWF antigen, ristocetin cofactor, protein C and rotein S AT III, platelet aggregation. Manual techniques and automated instruments are used. The locally made reagent and normal pooled plasma are prepared for routine service at low cost. A molecular biology lab for carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis is part of the service. Locally prepared fibrin glue (low cost) is routinely used as local hemostasis and sealant for both hemostatic and nonhemostatic disorders.
Multidisciplinary activities/research: The IHTC is an interdepartmental organization with 10 departments participating in this program. Staff participating in this program include 4 pediatric hematologists, 2 adults hematologists, 1 blood transfusionist, 1 orthopedist, 2 physiatrists, 2 dentists, 2 nurse coordinators, 5 medical technologists, 1 obstetricia, 2 psychiatrists, 1 social worker. The Pediatric Hematology Unit has 4 physicians, 5 medical technologists, 1 nurse coordinator and a secretariat office.
Additional information: Our clinical and laboratory services are simple, basic, unsophisticated with low-cost set up which benefits trainees from developing countries with similar limited resources, similar patient problems and environment.
Transfusion Medicine: The training includes clinical and labroatry aspects of transfusion service at the hospital blood bank, Nathional Blood Centre and Red Cross Society. National Blood Program, plasma fractionation and preparation of blood bag and blood bank reagents are rovided to interested persons. Previous trainees have benefited from this aspect.
After training is completed, the trainee always continues to collaborate with our centre for reagents, lab techniques, help organizing workshops and advice on developing hemophilia care and blood transfusion service.
