DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING PROGRAM
Clinical activities: The centre serves over 300 adult patients with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease and other congenital disorders. Services include general hemophilia care (comprehensive), orthopedic surgery, and physiotherapy. Current staff include two surgeons, four adult hematologists (one is emeritus),one social worker, one physiotherapist, and three nurses.
Laboratory activities/research: Complete diagnostic lab evaluation; testing and clinical trials of hemophilia concentrates. Major research interests are inhibitor diagnosis and treatment, vWd diagnosis and treatment, and hemophilia carrier detection and factor VIII and IX gene mutations.
Multidisciplinary activities/research: Comprehensive care review of all Annuals (weekly). Discussion of problem issues regarding certain patients. Involved in UDC actively. Community education (e.g., school nurses, social workers, etc.).
Additional information: In Colombia, we trained two orthopedic surgeons in orthopedic surgery on patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. The centre was formerly partnered with Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, as part of the WFH Twinning program. The centre can train 8 to 12 fellows annually. There are no limitations based on time of year.
DESCRIPTION OF IHTC FACILITIES
Location: Southern part of downtown Los Angeles, in a non-residential neighbourhood, and Santa Monica.
Climate: Temperate climate. Usually dry, hot in the summer and cool in winter.
Accommodation (residence, meals, etc...): Accommodation can be provided at nearby hotels, but it can be expensive. Lodging in Southern California is very expensive. Meals are available at the hospital.
Transportation: Transportation can be difficult. Public transportation is inadequate and distances are far. Rapid transit is improving. However, a car can be rented with an international driving license.
Language: English, Spanish
Financial assistance: Dependent on WFH funds.
Cost of living (per week): 500-600 USD
