DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING PROGRAM
Clinical activities: The New England Hemophilia Center is located in Central Massachusetts, and serves approximately 200 pediatric and adult patients with hemophilia A and B, von Willebrand disease and multiple other clotting and thrombotic abnormalities. The Hemophilia Center is housed in a modern clinic area adjacent to the hospital. This clinic serves not only persons with clotting disorders, but has an active hematology service as well.
Laboratory activities/research: There is a coagulation laboratory performing all relevant coagulation and hypercoaguability testing. At the University of Massachusetts, there is a large clinical molecular genetics laboratory where factor mutational analysis is performed. Rotations through this laboratory can be arranged.
Ongoing studies at the Hemophilia Center include a long-term study of persons with hemophilia/HIV who are non-progressors, interactions between hepatitis C and HIV care in this patient population and various pharmaceutical studies of new factor concentrates. Since we have had several laboratory collaborations, opportunities exist to spend time in labroatories doing baisc research in HIV and hepatitis C.
Multidisciplinary activities/research: There is an active outpatient and inpatient service staffed by one physician, two nurses, one orthopedic surgeon, a genetic counselor and a social worker.
Additional information: Expertise in setting up a database also exists.
Trainees in the past have also spent time at the Dartmouth and Vermont Hemophilia Centers, the American Red Cross and the New England Hemophilia Association (the lay organization for persons with clotting disorders).
