Selection Criteria
Fellowships are offered to candidates from developing countries who are physicians or healthcare workers working in close collaboration with hemophilia services.
Candidates are chosen based on their level of commitment and potential to improve hemophilia treatment in their country after the completion of their training period. Successful candidates have strong medical references and a specific recommendation from the National Hemophilia Member Organization (NMO) of their country.
It is expected that candidates will be asked to implement in their country the expertise acquired through their training. Therefore, it is important that candidates seek training in those aspects of care for people with hemophilia which are practiced at their centre.
When deciding on the centre where training is to be undertaken, strong emphasis will be placed on the facilities available/likely to become available at the centre where the candidate works and the chance of acquiring that expertise at the designated IHTC.
Application Process
Applications for IHTC fellowships should include a completely filled out application form, a curriculum vitae and two reference letters. For information purposes, applicants must first send their application to the officially recognized National Member Organization (NMO) of their country. The NMO, or the applicant, can then forward the application to the WFH Headquarters in Montreal, Canada. When there are multiple applications, the NMO is requested to rank all the applications in the country’s order of priority, bearing in mind the merits of the application and the country’s needs.
The host training centre and the awarded sum are designated on the basis of distance of applicant to the IHTC, the candidate’s preference of training centre, language, period of training and facilities made available for meals and accommodation.
Selected fellows will receive an economy-fare airplane ticket from their country of origin to the host IHTC. A grant will be sent to the host IHTC to cover accommodation and living expenses. The host IHTC is responsible for arranging facilities, including inexpensive accommodation and meals. Duration of training ranges from four to six weeks.
At the end of the training period, the host Centre completes the Fellowship Evaluation Form and sends it to the WFH. Similarly, the fellow is requested to send a completed Training Report Form and Log Book describing all aspects of training received.
Submission Deadline
The Fellowship program now has two cycles per year for the selection of IHTC fellows. Fellowship applications must be received at the WFH headquarters by June 30 and December 31 of each year.
Awards
The IHTC Committee, composed of the IHTC chair, IHTC directors and the WFH, and the multidisciplinary Committee chairs, is responsible for making the final selection of fellowships.
