World Hemophilia Day 2007

Getting active and raising awareness on World Hemophilia Day

This year’s theme highlights how physiotherapy and a tailored exercise program can dramatically improve the lives of people with hemophilia. World Hemophilia Day is observed annually on April 17, but the WFH hopes this year’s theme will encourage people with bleeding disorders to take action year-round.

The WFH “Improve Your Life!” campaign is a call for people with bleeding disorders to take some basic steps towards good health, such as consulting their physiotherapist for an annual check-up and guidance on appropriate sports and exercises to suit their circumstances.

The benefit of exercise to people with hemophilia is especially meaningful in developing countries, where access to treatment products and care can be scarce. Even in developed countries with greater access to treatment, physical therapy remains an essential part of comprehensive medical care.

National hemophilia organizations worldwide celebrated World Hemophilia Day through public awareness campaigns and fun-filled activities. Here are a few activities that took place around the globe:

Biking for hemophilia awareness in Venezuela

In VENEZUELA’s capital city, young children with hemophilia and their families were treated to a fun movie, followed by an information seminar by local medical experts. Swimming competitions were also held throughout Caracas, highlighting the day’s “Improve Your Life” theme.

Swimming physiotherapy session in China

Several major city-centres in CHINA organized seminars for local hemophilia patients and their families. Patients had the opportunity to discuss their condition with medical experts, while also trying new self-infusion techniques. Several Chinese cities also had exercise and water therapy demonstrations. These were followed by celebrations that included painting competitions, music, games, and prizes.

Children rally in Sudan

In SUDAN, children with hemophilia treated their families, friends, doctors, and local officials to a display of artwork, theatrical performance, and song. The goal was to provide creative outlets for youth with bleeding disorders, while also communicating the need for government support and medical services in the country.
