World Hemophilia Day 2009 –
A Global Celebration
Europe
Bulgaria
The Bulgarian Haemophilia Society held a well-publicized party for a large group of children with hemophilia. Health officials and leading medical specialists also attended the celebration.
Czech Republic
Patients and families visited the Prague zoo as part of the World Hemophilia Day celebrations, led by the Czech Society of Haemophilia.
France
The French Hemophilia Association (Association française des hémophiles, AFH) organized a national awareness campaign using France’s national TGV railway system on World Hemophilia Day. The AFH set up mobile multimedia information booths in passenger cars on trains running on the main lines en route to Paris, Lyon, Mulhouse, Marseille, Toulouse, and Perpignan.
Greece
The importance of comprehensive care was promoted extensively by the Greek Haemophilia Society, which also distributed a special issue
of its magazine commemorating
the 20th World Hemophilia Day.
Lithuania
A full day of events in the capital,Vilnius, attracted media attention and many participants. The Lithuania Hemophilia Association (Lietuvos Hemofiljos Associja) put on performances, medical lectures, and a children’s art exhibition in the city centre. Paintings portrayed the dreams of children with hemophilia who want to live a normal life but lack access to treatment products.
Macedonia
A group of medical professionals in Skopje published and distributed World Federation of Hemophilia information material, which they had translated into Macedonian. Copies of Guidelines for the Management of Hemophilia and Hemophilia in Pictures were given to patients and doctors.
Poland
The Polish Hemophila Society’s various activities included a debate with a ministry of health representative on the need for improved hemophilia treatment and care.
Slovakia
The National Hemophilia Center and the Slovak Hemophilia Society (Slovenské Hemofilické Zdruzenie) invited hemophilia patients and medical professionals to a highly successful meeting. World Hemophilia Day was also used to launch the publication “European Principles of Hemophilia Care”.
Spain
A main objective of the Spanish Federation of Hemophilia (Federación Española de Hemofilia) this year is to raise awareness of the bleeding disorder and its repercussions. World Hemophilia Day was used to contact the media as part of the campaign.
Sweden
The Swedish Hemophilia Society held a remembrance day for the 70-80 people who have died from HIV or hepatitis C infection in Sweden. Memorial Day included a candlelit vigil on a square outside a government building.
United Kingdom
The Haemophilia Centre at Torbay Hospital in Devon, England, participated for the first time in the nation’s World Hemophilia Day activities. The centre’s involvement included an eye-catching display in the public foyer.
In Belfast, Northern Ireland, celebrations and activities included an information day at a Belfast hemophilia centre. The Belfast Chapter of the United Kingdom Haemophilia Society also hosted a well-attended gathering at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
