Susan Skinner Memorial Fund Award winners

The Susan Skinner Memorial Fund (SSMF) offers young female leaders in the bleeding disorders community a chance to expand their knowledge about treatment and care worldwide. This year, two young women will receive the SSMF scholarships to attend the Hemophilia World Congress in Istanbul, Turkey, June 1 – 5, 2008.

Julia McDougal

Julia McDougal, 19, has been a member of NHF’s National Youth Leadership Institute for the almost two years, and currently sits on the Utah Hemophilia Foundation’s board of directors. She is also a spokesperson for NHF’s Project Red Flag – Real Talk about Women’s Bleeding Disorders. Julia is passionate about serving the bleeding disorders community, and hopes to learn more about treatment and care worldwide. She is excited to meet new people and hear about their own personal experiences of living with a bleeding disorder.

Marija Nakeska

Marija Nakeska, 26, has been active in Macedonia’s hemophilia organization, Hemalog, for the past eight years, and was recently named the Hemalog’s vice president. Involved in all aspects of the organization, Marija also helps organize activities for Hemalog’s youth members. Coming from a family with a long history of hemophilia, Marija is well aware of the difficulties of living with a bleeding disorder. At the Congress, she hopes to gain knowledge about how to increase Hemalog’s government and volunteer involvement and create programming for young parents of children with bleeding disorders.

We wish the best to Julia and Marija for an exciting, educational Congress experience. Congratulations!
